Loving Kindness meditation, also know as Metta (Pali) or Maitri (Sanskrit) meditation is a practice for cultivating warmth and friendship for yourself and all beings.
The practice unfolds by repeating phrases (silently or out loud) such as: May I be happy, may I be peaceful, may I be free of suffering, may I live with ease. Then gradually expanding these thoughts to someone dear to you, to strangers, and to enemies (difficult people and those who have caused you harm.)
While these stages can be completed in a single sitting, you will experience a deeper realization of the practice by focusing on one stage at a time for days, weeks, or months.
